Technique - Wire prong setting for undrilled round cut gemstones

In this free video tutorial I want to show you how to prong set a round cut gemstone using wire.  This technique is a clever way to set flat round cut stones that do not have a drill hole. The setting can be used for oval stones as well so play around with it and see what works for you.

What you will need to practice this technique:

Wire:

  • For small stones upto 4 mm, 0.6 mm (22 ga) square wire works well.
  • For larger stones 0.8 mm (20 ga) and higher is recommended.
  • You need to adjust the wire gauge according to your stone size.

  • Flush cutters
  • Chain nose pliers
